Mission Statement

We believe field work should be safe for people of all identities, and provide an affirming environment for a diverse scientific community to thrive in and contribute to advancing their fields.

The bare minimum is to confront and eliminate sexual assault and harassment in the field.

We aim to create a culture of safe and inclusive field experiences at Oregon State University (and beyond) by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of sexual assault and harassment, and provide resources and training to prevent and eliminate sexual assault and harassment in the field.

Why are we doing this?

1. Sexual assault and harassment are pervasive in academic field work. Institutional policies focus on office or classroom misconduct, overlooking the specific and isolating nature of field work.

2. Sexual assault and harassment disproportionately affects womxn and other minorities in the field, and impacts career trajectories and retention.

3. These effects are amplified for people with intersecting minoritized identities, e.g. related to race and ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and more.

To learn more about the scale and impacts of sexual assault and harassment in the field, read more on our resource page
